How We Make These Recommendations

Site: FrenchiePetInsurance.com Author: Taylor Ann Kelly Last updated: 2026-05-30

Every comparison, ranking, and recommendation on this site comes from the same eight-dimension rating process, applied to the same standardized Frenchie profile, using publicly available carrier policy documents and veterinary data.

This page documents exactly what that process is.

What we test

Every carrier reviewed on this site is evaluated on these eight dimensions:

  1. BOAS / brachycephalic coverage. Does the policy explicitly cover brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome surgery and related respiratory conditions? Is BOAS called out by name, or covered under a broad "hereditary condition" umbrella? Are there breed-specific exclusions or waiting periods?

  2. IVDD and orthopedic coverage. Does the policy cover intervertebral disc disease and orthopedic conditions? French Bulldogs have a significantly elevated risk for IVDD compared to the general dog population (Source: American College of Veterinary Surgeons). Carriers vary substantially on how they handle spinal conditions.

  3. Waiting periods. How long between policy enrollment and when coverage becomes active? Most carriers impose a 14-day general waiting period and a 6-month orthopedic waiting period, but this varies. Some impose longer breed-specific waiting periods for known-risk breeds.

  4. Pre-existing condition policy. How does the carrier define "pre-existing"? Are curable conditions eligible for coverage after a symptom-free period? Some carriers (Embrace, Healthy Paws) allow re-coverage of curable pre-existing conditions; others do not.

  5. Annual and lifetime limits. Does the policy offer unlimited annual coverage, or is it capped? For a breed with potential for BOAS surgery ($2,000–$5,000+ per procedure, Source: UC Davis VMTH), IVDD surgery ($3,000–$8,000+, Source: VCA Animal Hospitals), and multiple possible surgeries over a 10-12 year lifespan, the difference between a $5,000 annual cap and unlimited coverage is material.

  6. Premium range for French Bulldogs. All premium comparisons use the same standardized profile: 2-year-old male French Bulldog, Houston TX 77001 (or comparable major US zip with high veterinary cost index), no pre-existing conditions at enrollment, 90% reimbursement, $250 deductible. Actual quotes are obtained from carrier websites or publicly stated ranges are used where live quotes require an application.

  7. Reimbursement model. Actual cost reimbursement vs benefit schedule reimbursement. Actual cost means the carrier pays a percentage of what your vet charges. Benefit schedule means the carrier pays a predetermined amount regardless of your vet's bill. For high-cost procedures, actual cost reimbursement is significantly better for French Bulldog owners.

  8. Customer claims satisfaction. Aggregate review sentiment from Trustpilot, Better Business Bureau, and owner community forums (r/petinsurance, r/frenchbulldogs). Weighted toward claims-specific reviews, not general satisfaction. Paid review sites are not used.

How we test

Policy document review. Every carrier listed on this site has had its current policy document reviewed for the exclusion language around brachycephalic conditions, hereditary conditions, and orthopedic conditions. Where policy language is ambiguous, this is noted in the carrier's review section.

Standardized quote requests. The Frenchie profile above (2-year-old male, Houston TX, 90/250) is used for all premium comparisons. Where a carrier's online quote tool does not return a result for this profile, the publicly stated range is used and noted as "varies; get a personalized quote."

Veterinary cost benchmarks. Surgical and treatment cost estimates come from veterinary school cost guides (UC Davis VMTH, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine). These are used as benchmarks only — actual vet costs vary by location, facility, and individual case.

Industry data. NAPHIA (North American Pet Health Insurance Association) annual State of the Industry reports are used for market-level statistics on premiums, claims ratios, and coverage trends. NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) state filings are consulted for carriers with publicly available loss ratio data.

Owner community research. Recurring complaint patterns in r/frenchbulldogs, r/petinsurance, and French Bulldog owner Facebook communities are reviewed for each carrier. Anecdotal claims are not treated as data — they are used to generate hypotheses that are then checked against policy documents and Trustpilot/BBB data.

Update frequency. Carrier policy language and premiums change. Pages are reviewed and updated when: a carrier announces a policy change, a material shift in Trustpilot or BBB score occurs, or the page is more than 90 days old. The "last reviewed" date on each page reflects the most recent review.

What we don't do

  • We do not test claims in real time. We have not enrolled a French Bulldog in a policy and submitted a claim for the purpose of testing. We are not veterinarians, and claims testing would require active pet insurance enrollment.
  • We do not accept payment for carrier placement. No carrier has paid, or been offered, any consideration in exchange for a ranking or recommendation on this site.
  • We do earn affiliate commissions. If you click through to a carrier and purchase a policy, this site receives an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. The commission does not affect carrier rankings. Carriers are ranked on the eight dimensions above, and commission rates are not a rating dimension.
  • We do not fabricate quotes. If a specific carrier's Frenchie quote requires a live application or is not publicly available, the rate listed is the publicly stated range, noted as such.
  • We do not recommend a specific carrier for your dog. We provide information and comparisons. Your dog's age, health history, location, and your budget all affect which policy is right for you. Use the comparison pages as a starting point, then get personalized quotes.

Affiliate disclosure

This site earns affiliate commissions when you click through to a carrier and purchase a policy. Full disclosure appears above the first affiliate link on every money page. Commission rates are not disclosed per carrier (they are commercially confidential), but they are comparable across the carriers reviewed and do not affect rankings.

If you believe a carrier ranking is inconsistent with the eight-dimension framework above, the contact page is the right place to raise it.
